Our Commitment

Southern Smiles is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards.

Standards We Aim For

We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities.

What We Have Done

  • Semantic HTML landmarks (main, nav, headings) and ARIA labels for screen readers.
  • Keyboard navigation support, including a "Skip to main content" link and visible focus indicators.
  • Color contrast tested against WCAG AA for body text on background colors.
  • Alternative text on meaningful images and decorative images marked as such.
  • Form fields with associated label elements, descriptive placeholder text, and live error messaging.
  • Honors the operating-system prefers-reduced-motion setting to suppress non-essential animations.
  • Patient portal modal dialogs trap keyboard focus and can be dismissed with the Escape key.

Known Limitations

Despite our efforts to make this website accessible, some content and features may not yet be fully accessible. We are actively working to address:

  • Some embedded third-party content (Google Maps, fonts) may not meet the same accessibility standards as our own content.
  • PDF documents uploaded by staff for patients may not always be tagged or screen-reader optimized.
